Set to be released on 2009 it is now being directed by Ruairi Robinson an Irish Director. I will be expecting a great remake with the fast pace of the movie and futuristic bikes and chase scenes. I do hope it would live up to the expectations of the die-hard Akira fans. One detail of the remake that was divulged was the setting would be Japan but rather Manhattan. For those who are not familiar with Akira, here are some bits so you could get the idea:

Akira was originally a six-volume manga that was converted into an anime movie in 1988. Featuring a vast array of characters with intertwined personalities and subplots to get a heart pumping story from the master himself Katsushiro Otomo. Here’s a brief description form firstshowing.net:

“Kaneda is a bike gang leader whose close friend Tetsuo gets involved in a government secret project known as Akira. On his way to save Tetsuo, Kaneda runs into a group of anti-government activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists and a powerful military leader. The confrontation sparks off Tetsuo’s supernatural power leading to bloody death, a coup attempt and the final battle in Tokyo Olympiad where Akira’s secrets were buried 30 years ago.
